gettin’ techy with it

When it comes to technology, I have a split personality. There are days when I’d like to tune out, unplug and lose myself in a really great book (reading recommendations appreciated). And then there are days when I think it’s the coolest thing ever, like the day I started using Wecora. (They’re not paying me to say this, people – although they could if they wanted to.)

Remember the pre-cell phone days? It’s amazing that we got anything done, let alone in a timely manner. That’s how I feel about my new best friend. Here’s how they got me (this is straight from their web site):

“As a creative professional, your job is to think outside of the box. Wecora’s job is to help you share (and show) those thoughts without all of the additional work to do so.”

Below are some screen shots to give you an idea of how it works:

Gone are the days when I would print sheets for each product recommendation for a specific job. If it was an extensive remodel, I wound up with a binder full of printed images I couldn’t reuse because of changes in availability and pricing. (Gone also is the guilt from killing trees in the name of design.)

I use it to create boards for clients that feature potential products and finishes, including pricing information. The client is then invited via email to weigh in on my suggestions – liking or disliking items and adding comments. All the recommendations and communication are logged in one place…how handy is that?

If you’re old school, I’ll still make your design dreams come true without forcing you to use a computer. But if you’ve been afraid to try a project because you have a hard time keeping track of stuff, give me a call, and we’ll make you a Wecoran (I just made that up – trademark pending).

Until next time, I’ll be keeping an eye on design for you.

must have mod tiles

Turn a wall in your home into a work of art with these mod tiles.
Turn a wall in your home into a work of art with these mod tiles.

When you have a husband, three kids under age seven, two dogs and run your own business, not a lot surprises you.

I’m used to loud thuds in the night (my oldest started climbing out of his crib at nine months, so much so that we wondered if there was a dog-crate-type bed product we could buy for him – don’t judge), shortness of breath (my 125-pound English Mastiff lays on me in the morning until I get up and fill her dog bowl) and the sight of blood (and throw up and poop, both human and canine).

So I love a good surprise, especially if it’s about a great new product and introducing my clients to the type of finishes that make their project special.

Surprise from Modular Arts! I love their new small-scale tiles so much I want to marry them.  They’re made from high density, reinforced gypsum with a lightweight plant-based foam core and are designed for tighter areas and more intimate spaces. They come in mottled white, but get this – you can paint them any color you darn well please. They. Are. So. Cool. (I really hate when people do this, but the emphasis is truly deserved here.)

Remember the Rays? I knew this couple would appreciate the awesomeness of these tiles because of their love of modern art. I used them in their kitchen (the Zelle design), and the results even exceeded my expectations – I can’t wait to use them in another project. Call me, and let’s talk tile!

Until next time, I’ll be keeping an eye on design for you.

tile your way to happiness

Carpet tiles are an easy way to give your room a modern update.
Carpet tiles are an easy way to give your room a modern update.

Two words for you: carpet tiles.

I love them. I dream about them. I want everyone to learn of their power and versatility.

To be clear, I’m not talking about a remnant – the kind you took a nap on when you were in kindergarten or that you’ve got near your back door to catch grass, mud and other unsavory items from dirty boots and even dirtier paws.

I’m talking about the modern, multi-purpose carpet tile made accessible to the masses by www.flor.com. I’ve used them in oh so many ways:

  • Around beds in a master bedroom
  • In offices
  • In kitchens
  • In dining rooms
  • In the entry ways of client homes

Carpet tiles are one of the easiest ways to update a room and give it a modern feel. The selection of colors and designs is staggering, they’re easy to install, and they can be replaced if a stain occurs. You can change them out to reflect the seasons, the holidays – even your mood! There are also different types of carpet tile for different applications.

Try them out, and have fun coming up with shapes and designs that suit your taste as well as your space. But be careful – they’re a bit like potato chips. It’s hard to stop at just one room.

Until next time, I’ll be keeping an eye on design for you.
